Against the backdrop of a dull and dreary patriarchy, the latest issue of Run the World 2022 celebrates the hopeful light we find from our everyday in Life in Colour: Victories of Multicultural Women in the 21st Century.

As a collective of law students from diverse backgrounds, we are far too familiar with the hardships endured by women both within and beyond the legal landscape. While we recognise that the journey for equality and justice is ongoing, our publication team wishes to honour the remarkable accomplishments of multicultural women who have changed our lived realities thus far. An appreciation for our present as we traverse into a vibrant future.

From powerful storytellers to under-appreciated industry trailblazers to legal heroes who are all at once advocates/advisors/allies, and to our very own mothers, this issue paints a picture that is pigmented with dynamic tones and hues that reflect their strife, victories and aspirations.

How Amanda Nguyen Rewrote Sexual Assault Laws

How much of an impact can one person alone have on the law? As a concept, the law seems daunting. In less dramatic terms, this story could start in any format and could use any other adjectives to describe the experiences of the writer of this article. But you will still find that the adjectives describing the different women of colour in your lives could change, but the commonalities of and similarities in our experiences as diverse women ….

The 21st Century Mulan

The tale of Mulan, a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man to join the army in her father’s stead, has been recounted repeatedly over time. The beloved Disney animation remains iconic in its representation of a brave, strong and virtuous Chinese heroine - a refreshing divergence from the typical portrayal of Chinese women. While it has inspired many girls, including myself, the Disney animation (1998) has been questioned for its ending in which Mulan refuses a powerful position in the male-dominated kingdom and instead returns home to be an obedient daughter …..

Barrister Marcia Clark: My Jewish Female Idol

I first encountered Marcia Clark when watching the captivating Netflix series ‘The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story’. What captivated me was not only the infamous trial characterised by trauma, turmoil, spectacles, and fabrications, but the lead prosecutor, Marcia Clark. Clark endured unrelenting misogyny, both inside and outside of the courtroom, and was ridiculed and humiliated by the media due to her physical appearance and fashion choices; whilst her male counterparts did not suffer even somewhat comparable media shaming ….
