What is alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and how might law students get a feel for the discipline before entering legal practice? In this episode, we chat with Dr Rosemary Howell and Niki Nojoumian about ADR, finding your place at law school, and UNSW Law Society's skills competitions.

Dr Howell teaches postgraduate Principled Negotiation at UNSW. She is a nationally accredited mediator and has appeared in the International Who's Who of Mediation since 2013. Her company Strategic Action also provides consulting services on planning, facilitation and training to state and federal entities around the globe.

Niki is the UNSW Law Society’s skills Vice President. Her portfolio facilitates competitions that provide students with the opportunity to develop and refine legal skills in a practical setting outside of a classroom. To achieve this, the skills portfolio runs internal and external competitions in four key areas: Negotiations, Client Interviewing, Witness Examination and Mediation.

Law Society 2021 (Part 2) with Alex Zoras

In this episode, we conclude our conversation with the Society’s co-presidents by discussing with Alex Zoras about the year so far, what she hopes for UNSW Law Society in the future and also her time within the society. Apart from leading the Law Society in 2021 and juggling various academic commitments, Alex is also an incredibly accomplished member of our community, representing UNSW in various skills competitions and also being the previous Skills Vice-President. She has previously worked at Bartier Perry as a paralegal and is clerking at Herbert Smith Freehills this summer. She was also the winner of last year’s AFR Top 100 Future Leaders law award.

Innovation and Journeys with BarNet JADE

BarNet JADE (Judgements and Decisions Enhanced) is a leading free online research platform in Australia and contains an extensive database that collects recent decisions of selected Australian Courts and Tribunals. Defending Human Rights with Rawan Arraf

Why work in human rights? What meaningful work can you do to support human rights? In this special public interest careers episode of InCites, Vice-President (PIC) Amal Naser has a conversation with Palestinian Australian human rights lawyer and executive director of the Australian Centre of International Justice, Rawan Arraf.

Rawan has ten years of legal experience in refugee protection, administrative law and international human rights law. Rawan most recently worked as a refugee lawyer at community legal centre, Refugee Advice & Casework Service providing a wide range of protection advice to people seeking asylum in Australia. She is actively engaged with lawyers and organisations working in universal jurisdiction litigation abroad and in 2018 trained with the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR), Berlin, working closely with the International Crimes and Accountability team on universal jurisdiction matters.
