How To Relieve Stress

It’s such a busy time of semester! We’re still finishing off our mid-semester assignments and have exams just around the corner. We recommend doing these 7 super simple, yet super effective things to help alleviate stress, jazz up your everyday life and put a smile on your face.

Read for 10-20 mins a day

With the amount of time we all spend on social media every day, surely we can find 10 to 20 minutes of our day to enjoy a good book.

If you really think you don’t have the time, listen to audiobooks on your phone!

We recommend:

A Man Called Ove by Fredik Backman

This book is moving and uplifting in the most unexpected ways. Not going to lie, it made me so happy even when I was bawling my eyes out.  

Homecoming by Yaa Gyasi

Breathtaking in its emotional power, this book is based on historical events and is so devastating in its sorrow and its beauty. I sound pretentious, but this book is really that good.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This is such a well-written and mesmerising book, especially perfect for fantasy lovers

Drink tea

Even if you’re a devout coffee drinker, we still recommend you try tea (which is basically a hug in cup). There are so many varieties, so you’re bound to find something you like.

We recommend:

English Breakfast

You can’t go wrong with this classic. It will give you a gentle little caffeine kick, calm your mind and keep you going all day long.

Ginger and Lemon

This tea is incredibly detoxing and relaxing, and will make you feel clean and healthy on the inside. It has disease-fighting antioxidants to help make sure you don’t get sick during this busy time of the semester.

Hibiscus Tea

This is a flower-based tea that can be enjoyed both hot and iced, so feel free to change it up depending on your mood. It can calm you before bed or ‘ice’ you back to attention when you’re studying. It has antiviral properties and can help you fight stress!

Do a Coastal Walk

We have so many beautiful coastal walks in Sydney. Seeing how big the world really is can really put life’s daily challenges into perspective for you.

We recommend:

Coogee to Bondi – about 4km

  • You don’t need to drive.
  • It’s so close to UNSW so you can literally do it whenever.
  • Everyone knows how beautiful this walk is.

Spit Bridge to Manly – about 10km

  • Can get there by public transport.
  • It’s a longer walk to clear your head, and it literally has a little bit of everything.

Royal National Park Coastline – 26km

  • Pick a distance that suits you and go for it!
  • Along the way you’ll see some incredible beaches, maybe the Figure 8 pools, Wedding Cake Rock and have the chance to do some amateur rock-climbing.

Light a Candle

Aromatherapy can reduce the levels of cortisol (the ‘stress hormone’) in your immune system and increase contentment. Easy, cheap and effective!

Vivid Festival

‘Lighten up’  heading down that home run of the exam period by gathering a group of friends and heading to Sydney’s annual Vivid festival. The vibrant atmosphere is sure to brighten up any pre-exam woes,  and give you the opportunity to enjoy live music and food trucks at a number of venues across Sydney. The festival runs until 16 June 2018 so we recommend ditching your readings for one night and taking some time to hang out with some good mates for a night of solid banter which is bound to brighten up your spirits. Who knows, it may even shed a new light on any policy questions that tend to pop up in exams!

Spotify Your Troubles Away

Tune into some of Spotify’s best playlists to unwind before the exam storm hits.

We recommend:

  • The ‘soft pop’ playlist which features a number of all-time favourites such as Sam Smith, Adele, Ed Sheeran balanced alongside the uplifting tracks by the Script, Jason Mraz, Charlie Puth and Bruno Mars.
  • The ‘study zone’ playlist is also a crowd pleaser with lots of motivational tunes ready to pump you up to help you get over those final hurdles. 

 

Tuck In

Stock up on some good food before those imminent deadlines eat you up. We recommend grabbing a group of friends and hitting the town for some brunch. Sydney is brimming with Instagram famous brunch spots, including some of these recommendations below.
