ALSA COMPETITIONS APPLICATION


ALSA Championship Moot

The King and Wood Mallesons Championship Moot is a prestigious national moot held at the annual ALSA Conference. Areas of law covered can include administrative, commercial, Commonwealth constitutional, contract, corporations, criminal, equity, property, tort and competition and consumer law. Finalists from all internal mooting competitions and competitors in previous external competitions are encouraged to apply. A team of three competitors will be selected. Competitors must be available to prepare during the mid-year break.

The key dates for this competition are as follows:

Applications open on Monday 4 May.
Applications close on Monday 18 May.
Applicants will be informed of results by Sunday 24 May.
Problem question released on June 1.
Written submissions due by June 28 at midnight.
The competition will be held between 6-11 July.

ALSA International Humanitarian Law Moot

The Australian Red Cross, ALSA and the International Committee of the Red Cross host the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Mooting Competition during the annual ALSA Conference. Students who have completed a course on IHL and/or participated in internal and external competitions are encouraged to apply for this moot. A team of two competitors will be selected. Competitors must be available to prepare during the mid-year break.

Applications open on Monday 4 May.
Applications close on Monday 18 May.
Applicants will be informed of results by Sunday 24 May.
Problem question released on June 1.
Written submissions due by June 28 at midnight.
The competition will be held between 6 - 11 July.

ALSA Client Interview

Client Interviewing Competition develops an essential skill necessary for all lawyers. When a lawyer first meets a client, he/she needs to interview the client and gather facts about their problem in order to understand the client’s needs and assist the client in making an informed decision. Such an interview is the setting of the client interviewing competition.
The key dates for this competition are as follows:

Applications open on Monday 4 May.
Applications close on Monday 18 May.
Applicants will be informed of results by Sunday 24 May.
Problem questions released late June.
The competition will be held between 6 - 11 July.

ALSA Negotiation

Negotiations is a meeting between two legal teams (a team consisting of two participants), on behalf of their respective clients, with the intention of resolving a dispute. Negotiations are important in the legal sphere, since if performed successfully it can result in litigation being avoided. The Negotiations Competition help develop the competitor's creativity, problem solving, communication skills and team work which re relevant to any career, providing practical experience not acquired in the core law subjects.

ALSA Witness Examination

The Witness Examination Competition requires individuals attempt to advance their side's case by examining witnesses to adduce oral evidence. The trial runs from the opening statements, to the examination of witnesses, through to the closing address. Witness Examination involves thinking on your feet, and requires little preparation.The objective of the Competition is to develop the competitor's communication and critical legal thinking skills.
