Announcement: NEW External Competitions Selection Policy and Application Form (2010) Selection Panels v009 (2009) 09-12-31 published
The External Competitions division of the Competitions Portfolio has revised the External Selections Policy from 2009 that will be used for all External Competitions. The revisions are aimed at enhancing the original objectives of the policy is to bring transparency, consistency, and impartiality to the selection process. To that end, the policy makes provisions for a selection panel which will include selectors who are responsible for the External division (clause 2.1), selectors who have expertise in competitions (clauses 2.2 - 2.4), and selectors who will bring impartiality to the selection panel (clauses 2.5 - 2.7). Selectors may be removed if there is a potential conflict of interest (clause 2.9), there is a clear selection criteria which will be made available to all applicants (clause 4), and an appeals process (clause 3.4).

Topic: Examine whether authoritarian capitalism is a viable alternative to its Western liberal version, to promote long term economic growth and development.

First prize: $2500 cash award + travel grant*

The Hayek Essay Contest is open to all individuals 35 years old or younger. Entrants should write a 5,000 word (maximum) essay. The NSW Young Lawyers Civil Litigation Committee Essay Competition 2010 is now open.
The Competition is open to all law students and young lawyers and barristers in their first five years of practice or under 36 years of age. The Hon Justice Clifford Einstein will be selecting the prize winners for this prestigious competition.
Entries of between 2500-3000 words are to be submitted on one of the following topics:
• Discuss how the courts are inclined to view case management in light of the decision in AON Risk Services Australia Limited v Australian National University [2009] HCA 27 and other recent reforms in this area of the law
• Consider the court's role in cases regarding media publicity surrounding the publication of litigants' documents and in high profile cases generally
• Assess the modern approaches to Alternative Dispute Resolution in the context of the ADR Blueprint
• Discuss the responsibility of parties to civil litigation to identify the real issues in dispute in a clear, precise and open manner: Baulderstone Hornibrook Engineering Pty Ltd v Gordian Runoff Ltd [2008] NSWCA 243
• It is crucial that expert witnesses uphold the obligations imposed upon them by the Expert Witness Code of Conduct (Uniform Civil Procedure Rules 2005, Sch 7). Discuss
The essays should be submitted to the Vice Chair of the Civil Litigation Committee, Natalie Karam at no later than 11.59pm on Sunday 18 July 2010.
The winner will receive a $250 cash prize and book and the runner up will receive a $150 prize, with shortlisted finalists receiving movie gift passes. Justice Einstein will be announcing the winners at a prize ceremony with other members of the legal profession in attendance on Tuesday 17 August 2010 at 6pm.
