The Publications division of the Education portfolio is the team responsible for bringing you everything you need to know about what is happening in and around the Law School. Our dedicated team of editors, designers and contributors work to bring you entertaining, informative and thought-provoking publications throughout the year. Here is just a brief introduction to what Publications is responsible for:
1. Lawkipedia: Aimed at those entering the law school, this guide contains everything you need to know to get through your first year at UNSW Law School, and plenty of things you don’t! Look out for it during O-Week or in the first week of Session 1.
2. Innominate: The Law School’s weekly newsletter, jointly produced with the Law Faculty, which lets you know exactly what’s going on, when it’s happening, and where. Innominate is available each Monday morning from the law foyer, as well as electronically on the Law Faculty Website and in your student email inboxes.
3. Poetic Justice: The Law School magazine, Poetic Justice, is issued twice each session (in weeks 6 and 12) and contains interviews, photos, editorials, political commentary, articles on the profession, reviews, and satirical works - including cartoons. Contributions come primarily from students, but may also come from our Sponsor firms, and are welcome from everyone throughout the year!
4. Summer Clerkship and Graduate Employment Guide*: Aimed at those in their penultimate or final year of law school, this guide provides a rundown of the Clerkship and Graduate Programs offered by most firms. This Guide includes information about the process for applying for a Clerkship or Graduation position, a timeline of ‘important dates’, a profile and description of each participating firm and their recruitment programs, and where possible, a personal account by a student from UNSW who undertook their clerkship or received a graduate position at the firm. This Guide is issued towards the end of Session One (in time to help with graduate and clerkship applications).
5. Paralegal Guide*: Providing a detailed outline of the various Paralegal positions available at law firms around Sydney, this guide is a must-read for any student thinking of taking on part-time work in the legal world. The Paralegal Guide provides contact information for the various firms, as well as detailing their individual processes for accepting paralegals for work.
6. Alternative Careers and Government Careers Guide: This publication targets areas of law that are less commercially orientated and which are not traditionally defined under the ‘corporate law’ heading. It provides detailed information on both a broad range of law related and non-law related careers. This includes information about pro-bono departments in law firms, work in the financial sector (e.g. management consulting and investment banking), public interest law (such as international humanitarian rights law or native title law), and other non-commercial career opportunities (e.g. opportunities in the Australian Defence Force and other Government Departments). This Guide is issued towards the end of Session One (in time to help with graduate and clerkship applications).
7. Electives Guide: An online publication covering the electives available to study. It draws on the experiences of students who have already studied the subject to assist others in making their electives choices.
8. Law Annual: Similar to a yearbook, this publication is produced primarily for those in the final year. It contains pictures, biographies and memories from the graduating year group, and provides a lasting memory of their life in the Law School. It will be available at the Valedictory Dinner.
