Since the school’s inception in 1971, UNSW Law School has constantly and consistently developed a reputation, not only in terms of academic performance, but also for a proactive approach to vital, but often neglected aspects, of the Australian landscape and legal profession. As such, the law school has been pivotal in key law reforms, indigenous legal education and progress, social justice advocacy and community outreach. It is through this tradition of social conscience, has the Equity Portfolio of the UNSW Law Society emerged as one of the most socially progressive in the country. Thus, at its roots, the Equity Portfolio aims to ensure the legal education that UNSW law students embark upon is marked by a commitment to the betterment of special interest groups, by inspiring and reaffirming the role of law as a powerful tool for social justice and considered change. In doing so, the Equity Portfolio hopes to harness and fortify the resolve of the next generation of Australia’s leading progressive law-practitioners. The Equity Portfolio is sub-divided into the following four sub-portfolios: Social Justice; Women’s; Indigenous; and Queer. These sub-portfolios are the most active and represent the Equity Portfolio’s main areas of advocacy. Furthermore, the Equity Portfolio also incorporate issues concerning the Law School’s international and graduate students.
