Coordinated by student volunteers, the Law Mentoring Support Network (LawMSN) aims to assist students with the transition from:
• High school into university;
• Other degrees into law; or
• Work to university.
The program is a joint initiative of the UNSW Law Faculty and the UNSW Law Society, and is supported by the UNSW Counselling Unit.
What does the LawMSN program do?
The LawMSN program runs for the first five weeks of Session One, involving weekly meetings within small groups of students. Mentors within each group (older law students) act as facilitators for discussion. Topics covered include:
• Settling into UNSW Law School
• Teaching, learning and assessment at university
• How to get involved in student clubs and activities
• Where can a law degree take you?
It also allows the opportunity for first year law students to meet other first year students outside of class hours during those first few weeks of University and Law School. The aim of the program is to encourage the development of interpersonal relationships and establish a mentality inclusive of both the social and academic spheres of university life.
