Presidents' Welcome

Congratulations for joining the UNSW Law School! At the University of New South Wales you are guaranteed to be immersed in a motivating and challenging legal environment. You are assured to meet an assortment vibrant people, who are energetically projecting their careers and academic study in all sorts of directions. The UNSW Law School is unique because our community is so strong. At UNSW, students all share the one building, the one neighbouring cafe, the one law camp, the one annual Law Ball, the one calendar of ongoing socials and networking events, and have easily accessible (and endlessly helpful) academics and support staff who share their building with us.

At our Law School, the UNSW Law Society (“LawSoc”) is here to enrich your student experience, to ensure you meet life long friends and colleagues, and to guarantee you continue learning and discovering well beyond the classroom! LawSoc is here to develop you personally, professionally and socially. Although the Law Faculty is an incredible resource and support system in of itself, the UNSW Law Society is not the Faculty. LawSoc is an entirely student run body, whose executive are elected by law students, and whose aims and objectives are to serve and represent the law student body. LawSoc is here to promote the needs, concerns and interests of all students - from undergraduates, to JDs, first years, transfers, aspiring academics, corporate lawyers, judges, barristers, government sector workers and journalists.

The Competitions Portfolio facilitates opportunities for students to apply their theoretical knowledge of the law in practical and competitive contexts. We run a range of competitions, including Client Interviewing, Negotiations, Trial Advocacy, Mooting and Paper Presentation which help you develop valuable skills that will be vital in your future career. LawSoc’s internal mooting competitions help you train for spirited international moots all over the world!

The Social Portfolio organises a diverse variety of social events right across the university calendar. In 2011, we plan to celebrate the Law School’s 40th Anniversary in style.

The Equity Portfolio focuses on issues of social justice and equity for LawSoc’s members and their wider community. The Portfolio exists to defend and facilitate the ideal that all people have the right to fair treatment and equal access. We run the unique and specialized Women's, Indigenous, Queer, Social Justice and International sub-portfolios. Equity is runs mentoring programs, regular forums and social justice themed events, as well as greater involvement in the local community.

The Services Portfolio provides many benefits that enrich your life during law school.

The Careers Portfolio is your gateway to a vast array of career opportunities available to you from paralegal positions while you study, to summer clerkships, to working in the government or public sectors, and much more.

The Education Portfolio is responsible for entertaining and enriching the academic lives of all law students. Look out for our regular publications and forums with famous law graduates such as judges, politicians and media personalities!

Always remember if there are things you’d like to see happen in our Law School you have the right and the ability to speak with us. Similarly, we encourage you to provide us your feedback on what you think should be improved upon in LawSoc. If you ever have grievance with a member of the Executive, face a problem or equity violation at a LawSoc event, or generally need support make sure you know you can speak to LawSoc’s independent Grievance Officer, Kartini Saddington ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. On behalf of LawSoc we hope you have a transformative, exciting and challenging time during your degree at UNSW. We urge you to get involved, and to immerse yourself in the myriad of activities the UNSW Law School’s busy calendar has to offer. We hope that through LawSoc you find yourself at home within UNSW’s law community, bring substance and colour to what it means to be a person in the law, and that by the time you’re through you are changed, moved and ready to take on the world.

Yours Sincerely,

Angela Kintominas and Leslie Phung
